What Is The Difference Between Plant-Based Milk And Dairy Milk?

The main difference between plant-based milk and dairy milk is that the former is lower in calories, sugar, protein, and fat. Apart from soy milk, all non-dairy milk contains less protein, and vitamins like A and D. For example, a cup of cow’s milk has approximately 122 calories, 4 grams of fat, and 8 grams of protein.

How To Make Plant-Based Milk Using Nuts?

Here we will discuss general steps for making plant-based milk at home using nuts.

Soak: Place almonds in a bowl and fill it with filtered water. Then, cover the bowl and let the nuts soak at room temperature for 8 to 12 hours; this is done to make them easily digestible and release nutrients. Now, drain the soaking water and rinse the almonds thoroughly.

Blend: Add the soaked almonds, a pinch of sea salt, and three cups of water to a blender. Blend the ingredients on high for one minute, and then turn off the blender. Let the foam subside, and then add more water. Now, blend again for another minute to get blended almond milk.

Strain: Pour the blended almond milk through a nut milk bag and lift it to drain. Now, gently squeeze the bag to extract as much milk.

How To Use Plant-Based Milk?

Soy Milk: Soy milk is the best alternative to cow’s milk because of its high protein content. Compared to other plant-based milk, it easily tolerates higher temperatures. So, it is an ideal substitute for cow’s milk in plant-based recipes. For example, it can be used for making custards.

Almond Milk: Almond milk has an inherently sweet flavor, and its consistency is ideal for using as pie fillings. Above all, it is a good substitute for cow’s milk when making baked goods, pancakes, and many desserts.

Oat Milk: Oat milk is currently the most popular plant-based milk because of its creamy texture and delicious flavor. Besides, it is a versatile ingredient that can be used for cooking and baking.  It can be used for making mac and cheese, whoopie pies, and ice cream.

On a final note, keep in mind that you cannot use all plant-based milk as a substitute for cow’s milk when cooking.
